Diabetes has recently been characterized as a lifestyle condition rather than a disease. It is caused by an affluent lifestyle. It is called as ‘Madhumeha’ in Ayurveda.
Ayurveda Acharyas have mentioned the causes of Diabetes as high fat diets, excess intake of sugary & heavy foods, excess intake of carbohydrates rich food, non vegetarian foods, dairy consumption and sedentary lifestyle or inadequate physical activity in the Ayurvedic classics and there are studies conducted by the researchers recently and proved that the above said causative factors are the major culprits in causing Diabetes.
The above mentioned causative factors leads to ‘Positive calorie balance’ that is, excess calorie consumption than required which increase fat in the body & leads to obesity. Along with these, stress contributes to the development of Diabetes. Initially the extra sugars get deposited in the adipose tissue. Then it starts getting deposited in the liver. When the store house of the liver is exhausted, it leads to resistance of Insulin in the Liver. This is when the extra sugars start circulating in the blood in the form of VLDL and it is in this stage, you can see an increase in the FBS levels. VLDL is the primary & first molecule which carries triglycerides in the blood.
The next organ to get affected is the pancreas. Pancreas secretes Insulin. When the pancreas is functioning normally, it releases insulin when sugars are released into the blood. But in diabetes, due to the deposition of excess fat in the pancreas, it stops responding to the extra sugars and this is when an increase in the post prandial blood sugar is seen.
In type 2 Diabetes, the pathophysiology is not with the insulin or the sugar, but the problem lies with the insulin receptors due to extra deposition of fat in the insulin receptors.
The first and foremost step in the prevention & curing of diabetes is being away from the causative factors. Taking away the fat that has deposited on the insulin receptors, pancreas & the liver can reverse Diabetes.
Noticing the early signs & symptoms and acting on it promptly can prevent the complications that diabetes brings in. The early signs & symptoms include increased thirst, excess urination, unexpected weight loss, increased appetite, slow healing wounds, blurred vision & a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands & feet.
Dietary changes & lifestyle modification plays an important role in the management of Diabetes. Keep your weight under check. Burn the extra fat that has accumulated around your tummy. Even people with family history of Diabetes can prevent the disease by following a healthy diet & lifestyle. Some simple & effective ayurvedic home remedies to maintain the blood sugar levels are, herbal teas prepared using Fenugreek leaves, mint leaves and drumstick leaves.
Include more fibrous vegetables into your diet like green leafy vegetables, beans, cluster beans, long beans, gherkins, ridge gourd, bottle gourd etc. A meal should consist of low portions of grains & more portions of vegetables.
Along with this, Ayurvedic medicines play an important role in correcting the functioning of the liver, pancreas & balances the hormone levels. Ayurvedic therapies like Abhyangam, Pizhichil, Kizhi & Shirodhara can prove as a boon to you as it helps in better blood circulation & healing of the body and prevents the complications of diabetes like diabetic neuropathy.
Some yoga postures that can shed off the excess fat from the abdomen & stimulate the organs to function well are Balasana, Dhanurasana, Bhujhangasana, Shavasana, Tadasana, Chakrasana, Paschimottanasana, supta baddha konasana, supta matsyendrasana, Halasana & Surya Nasamkar.
