India’s Beauty Industry On The Rise

India's beauty sector is expanding rapidly, owing to a young population, higher disposable resources, and a growing emphasis on personal hygiene

This burgeoning sector has enormous potential, particularly with rising demand from smaller cities offering new opportunities.

Reports project the beauty industry will expand from $25.96 billion in 2023 to $35.21 billion by 2028, fueling a rising demand for beauty professionals. Currently, the sector employs 12.3 million people, with women comprising 66 per cent of the workforce. By 2024, there will be roles for around 15.8 million professionals, increasing to 20.3 million by 2027 and 26.3 million by 2030.

What factors are contributing to the rise in beauty consciousness in India?

Invest India states that the Indian beauty, personal care, and hygiene sectors are expanding rapidly. Fueled by a growing middle class and increased disposable incomes, particularly in premium categories, this industry is projected to expand further. Key drivers include:

Media & Influencers Impact : Social media drives beauty trends, like Korean skincare and men’s grooming. Men aged 18-25 now spend more on grooming than women, making up 25-30 per cent of beauty professionals' revenue and fueling 42 per cent growth in India’s men’s grooming market. Influencers amplify these trends with authentic endorsements.

Rise in Customised Beauty Solutions: Consumers are moving towards personalized hair and skincare, increasing demand for specialized expertise in cosmetology and aesthetic medicine for tailored long-term care.

Growing Acceptance of Aesthetic Treatments : Consumers are now opting for nutraceuticals and aesthetic treatments for confidence. India’s aesthetic medicine market rose from $100 million in 2000 to $1.74 billion in 2023, with a 13.2 per cent CAGR since 2020.

Rising Disposable Income and E-commerce : E-commerce and expanded access are boosting India's beauty market. With rising incomes, premium personal care products will grow at 54 per cent CAGR, while makeup and grooming are set to increase by 20-40 per cent by FY26.

Additionally, to drive industry growth, here are the emerging trends shaping the future :

Tech advancements, including laser treatments and AI diagnostics, are enhancing personalized and non-invasive beauty procedures, especially in smaller cities. Indians favour long-term, ethical, and personalized beauty treatments, including paraben-free and vegan skincare. Demand for skilled beauty professionals is rising, with the sector expected to grow from 25 per cent to 40 per cent by 2025.

The Role of Cosmetology and Aesthetic Medicine

Nandan Gijare, Managing Director of I2CAN (Indian Institute of Cosmetology, Aesthetics, and Nutrition), highlights, “India’s beauty and cosmetology sector, expanding at 17 per cent annually, outpaces growth in the US and Europe. Initially targeting women, it now serves men with unisex beauty experts. Innovations like at-home services, health-focused practices, and round-the-clock digital engagement drive this growth, particularly in Tier II and III cities, with frequent cosmetology center openings.”

The Indian aesthetic medicine industry is projected to hit INR 68,000 crore by 2024, growing at a 4 per cent annual rate since 2018. Per capita beauty spending has risen from INR 375 to INR 480. Driven by increased beauty awareness, India was among the top ten countries for non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2020.

Dr. Yashahree Zhende, HOD of Cosmetology at I2CAN, adds, "India's beauty industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by a surge in consumer awareness and demand for personalized treatments. As the industry evolves, beauty centers must prioritize customer education and address the growing demand for trained professionals in Tier 2 and 3 cities. At I2CAN, we are dedicated to providing individuals with the knowledge and skills required to flourish in this dynamic area, offering high-quality, accessible courses to match the industry's growing demands.”

India’s beauty industry is poised for a promising future, driven by innovation, market growth, and a surge in demand for premium skincare from Generation Z. Social media, urbanisation, and globalisation are boosting interest in personal care. With advancing technology and broader internet access, the industry is set for substantial growth.
