We never have time for exercise. We have to make time. We never have time for organising a healthy meal even though we have time to organise large office events and conferences. We have to make time. Every single day that we spend prioritising work, meetings, other things and put off getting healthy for another day, we are losing time to gain energy, stamina and endurance so that we can work harder, smarter and walk towards our success. Good health and good fortune are connected. How?
Being healthy makes your brain work sharper. You want to be known as that reliable person in the organisation who comes up with the most creative ideas and has the energy to execute things faster. This can happen if your state of mind and health is stable. People with poor health will experience poor sleep quality, lethargy, digestive issues like bloating, acidity and late afternoon energy slump. All these negatively impact your work output and your reputation.
Walking increases neurons. Every single time you walk, you are contributing to a sharper brain and more creative pathways in your mind. And this means that as a working professional, whether you are employed with someone or self-employed or run a business, adapting this continuously energetic brain to bettering your professional arena helps you be more successful at work.
Eating healthy is linked to positivity. Every research shows that if you eat small quantities and nutrient-dense foods, the biggest impact you have is on your moods. Skipping meals, large quantities of food and compulsive eating make you irritable, pessimistic and short on patience. Those are definitely not the signs of a good leader. So eating healthy every day helps you become a good leader because then you can lead your team, your partners and your work in a calm and positive manner.
Sleeping on time helps you wake up fresh. Who wouldn’t like a fresh positive face in the office? Becoming everybody’s favourite takes effort. And that effort includes a good night’s sleep. While it is fashionable to say that you were working till late at night, if you sleep on time, you will wake up fresher and be able to perform your tasks much faster than you would on a groggy brain trying to caffeinate yourself. The issue with less sleep and too much caffeine are also that your immune system and digestive system get destroyed. If that happens, you are opening yourself up to a plethora of diseases, viruses and illnesses. And you know that you don’t want to do that because you don’t want to be sick when the environment is so competitive.
After middle management, you need stamina. The moment you reach anywhere near a leadership position, what do senior managers look at? If other leaders find you resourceful, calm, stable and steady. How do you become that? A calm mind can only be possible if your state of health is unwavering. Nobody wants to give responsibility to someone who has a short temper or keeps falling ill. Not only is this kind of an employee a pain to deal with, but is also a drain to the insurance company. So if you are looking at having the staying power to go from middle management to senior management, fix your health. Prioritise it.
Before you dismiss everything I have said above and go back to sleeping five hours and eating unhealthy, remember that I treat very senior leaders. And it is only when they fix their health, moods, energy levels, do they rise and become the leaders that others get inspired by. Very few senior managers transition from being just senior managers to inspirational leaders. Become that inspirational leader by taking the first step towards it. Nurture yourself so that you can nurture your career. And then when you emit that positivity, you invite success and good fortune.
