The natural methods clearly didn’t work no matter what the internet says or everyone would have perfect skin (am I right?)
So beauty had to evolve. First, it was the use of vital proven ingredients like retinol, peptides, alpha hydroxy acids and vitamin C that can actually show results on your skin. Then, technologies like nano and liposomal delivery improved how those ingredients became delivered into the skin. Unfortunately, despite all these fabulous innovations, we still can't get deep into the skin where important actives are needed and we still can’t achieve that glorious perfect skin no matter how we use our skincare products.
This is where evolution happens. With 2019 we are going to see a huge shift in how we care for our skin. Not only will we still continue to see changes in skincare formulations with lighter airier formulations and smaller particles to improve depth of penetration into our epidermis and dermis. But, we will also see an explosion in beauty tech! The first signs of beauty tech came with home microdermabrasion brushes. Clearly, gentle homemade scrubs weren’t doing the job, so technology evolved to really help get that dead skin off. Using oscillating brushes, microdermabrasion brushes really helped and started the new beauty tech wave. (Now, it is really easy to go overboard, so please make sure not to use these more than 1-2 times a week, depending on how thick your skin is.)
Next, came home laser hair removal. Unfortunately, as laser hair removal requires high levels of energy, these failed because a home device can never give you the kind of results you are looking for. But, the idea of being able to launch a thousand ships in the wave of beauty tech. Some of the most exciting science involves LED. LED or light emitting diodes function on the concept of low levels of energy emitted in specific coloured wavelengths to stimulate certain targets. Certain colours cause different results - for example, red increases collagen while blue kills acne. Using these technologies at home can boost skin and hair gently without any side effects. For those with acne, blue light is a fabulous method to help augment any anti-acne regime. Also, the LED helmets for hair growth when done 2-3 times week can truly show improvement in hair fall and cause hair growth on the scalp. Basically, it's kinda awesome!
In addition to home LED, I am a big fan of home radio frequency tightening devices. When done correctly with a good quality handheld machine, these devices can really help improve skin contouring. Of course, you have to do a lot more then you have to do in a clinic given the low power of the devices, but if you have no other choice or want to add to a dermatological routine, these can really help!
Finally, 2019 will bring new advances where skincare and tech meet. We will see patches or applicators where products will be delivered deeper into the skin once applied to the skin. We will see products given in combination with micro needling plaques so that when you apply it, those microneedles produce channels, where produces, can elute inside. We will also see an explosion of micro needling designed to renew skin and boost baby collagen along with a host of serums to help this process. We will also see a host of IV infusions designed to balance us internally and a shift towards naturopathic and Ayurvedic supplements to augment our beauty goals. Basically, 2019 is all about tech with a basis in holistic wellness, and let me tell you, I can’t wait!
