Shonali Sabherwal, a macrobiotic nutritionist, chef, and author, recently engaged in a conversation with Mini Mathur, a TV host, actor, and women's health coach. Their discussion was centered on navigating midlife as a woman, emphasising a holistic approach to health and well-being. Mathur acknowledged that midlife can be a time of transition, marked by physical changes and a re-evaluation of priorities. She highlighted the importance of self-acceptance.
Sabherwal emphasised the role of nutrition in managing hormonal changes during midlife. She pointed out the importance of limiting sugar intake and incorporating whole grains, fibre, and fermented foods into the diet. “You need to know what works for you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach,” she added.
Mental health was another key topic that was discussed. Mathur advocated for prioritising mental well-being practices, including meditation, spending time with friends, and journaling. Given the modern woman's responsibilities, she needs to prioritise self-care to excel in all areas of her life. Mathur further highlighted the importance of mental health by suggesting indulgence in practices like meditation and creativity, concluding with a call for support for women from family and friends.
She went on to say that at this point in time, women can start new projects and be even more creative. Mathur urged men to be understanding of the challenges women face during midlife. “Be a little supportive,” she said. “It is a really trying time in a woman's life when she is very confused and foggy and not feeling on top of her game,” she signed off.
This insightful discussion at the BW Festival of Wellbeing Summit & Awards 2024, provided valuable guidance for women navigating midlife. By embracing a healthy lifestyle, prioritising mental well-being, and seeking support from loved ones, women can thrive during this transformative period.
