In today's world, we talk about inclusion, either at workplaces, at education places or in the society. But students with special needs face significantly increased rates of abuse and coercion in schools and colleges.
However, global commitments to the education of children with disabilities have led to progressive policy developments in India and an increase in the number of children traditionally excluded from the formal education system. To practise inclusion at schools or colleges, the management and the teachers play a vital role. Here is how these children need to be normalised with other common students in classroom.
Build in relations
The teachers or management of a school or college should not sympathise but normalise the condition and existence of a child with special needs. This is the first step when one can be made feel similar to others.
While keeping the classroom organised, teachers should teach other students to build good relations and friendship with the special child as their needs will certainly need more than connecting and engaging with others in order to succeed.
Give specialised guidance
Many students with special needs struggle with independent learning. They often need specialised guidance and more supportive support, such as breaking down their tasks into more manageable chunks, visual aids, and regular check-ins to make sure they're on track.
In class, teachers can provide immediate feedback and motivation. Students can also receive pull-out services with specialists to teach them the skills they need to focus, solve problems, and self-regulate emotions or behaviors.
Do not debar them
There are special kids with different abilities. In view to that, they should be encouraged to participate in school activities as others. If there are contests, events or extra-curricular activities at college or school, teachers should not debar the students with special needs, but should provide them opportunities.
This will get them motivated, provoke their confidence, and make them feel similar to others. It would also explore their abilities as well as inabilities. Therefore, such things can lead them to plan their future and achieve career goals.
