Late Night Sleep Risks Behavioural, Mental Issues In Teens: Research

According to a new research, teenagers who sleep too late at night are at an increased risk of behaviour related problems and delayed brain development in later life.

The study, published in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, reveals what happens to the brains of teenagers if they become "night owls". Researchers have examined the relationship between late bedtime preference and white matter development. The study was done on 209 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 for research. It was found that 49 per cent of them were male teenagers.

In these samples, the preference for evening became more prominent by age 19, the study noted. Larger individual-level change toward eveningness predicted greater severity in extrapolation, but not internalisation, symptoms at age 19.

Research states that teenagers who sleep late at night are at a higher risk of emotional and behavioral problems than their early counterparts. Teens who wake up late at night are at increased risk of behavioral problems and delayed brain development as they get older.

The results showed a key point of staying up late for most 17-19-year-olds. Therefore, it has been postulated that adolescents who go to bed very late at night undergo significant sleep deprivation, putting them at a higher risk of emotional and behavioral problems than their early counterparts.
