MENTAL HEALTH THE NEED OF THE HOUR

Coronavirus a curse to mankind has overpowered everything in the lives of the people, from enjoyment to restrictions one has to adhere to them only when social distancing and no human contact is applicable. As the death rate is increasing worldwide, a public health crisis has emerged at a larger scale. 

The society is aware about mental health, but fails to acknowledge it a lot of times. The mental health illness has gained control and is much more worse and dangerous than the pandemic declared worldwide. This illness will unleash more danger and despair than the coronavirus itself. The Indian Psychiatry Society, conducted a survey and has acknowledge a sudden inclination in the mental health issues and the possible reason behind this is the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic.

People are cautious and are ready to cure their physical illness but are unaware about the mental health and the role it plays in the lives of human being. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. 

The deterioration of the mental health can result into mental illness. Mental illness or mental health disorders refers to a wide Ange of mental health conditions such as disorders that affect one’s mood, thinking and behaviour. A mental illness can cause problems in the day to day routines and in any phase of life. About 1 in 5 adults has a mental illness in any given year. Mental illness can begin at any age, from childhood through later adult years, but most cases begin earlier in life. The effects of mental illness can be temporary or long lasting. One can also have more than one mental health disorder at the same time.

Emotions, stress and anxiety have been triggered during lockdown and self isolation. The period of lockdown has severed as wake ups call to take care of both physical health and mental health simultaneously.  

Ways To Take Care Of Your Mental Health In the Ongoing Lockdown

Talk to family and friends

Connecting with your friends and family can always be relaxing. One can easily share their thoughts which will help them to feel much lighter and less lonely. A sense of belongingness and love can be felt. Conversation with people will relax the mind and help cope up with stress and anxiety. 

Stick to a routine

One should always adhere to their daily routines, as this will keep them disciplined and it is important for our mental well-being. It helps one to feel that one is in control of the situation. Working from home, having meals on time, proper schedule of sleeping and waking up will help to maintain a better balance in life. Unstructured time is known to create boredom and can cause spikes in anxiety or depression.

Meditate/ Exercise

Meditation and yoga are ways to healthy life. Researches have shown that meditation reduces the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Meditation helps to provide calm and ease the mind.

Get Creative

Winston Churchill, once said “never waste a good crisis.” One should explore  inner hidden talent. Creativity helps you explore different aspect and makes one happy.
