For several years, mental health and mood disorder experts have paid close attention to burnout. Based on extensive research, the first comprehensive self-help guide to burnout has been published. Studies show that people with perfectionist tendencies are more likely to burnout than others. It also highlights some of the warning indicators of burnout.
Mental health expert and lead author, Professor Gordon Parker suggests that the impact is far-reaching. He said, "Most people think of burnout as extreme fatigue, but our research found that the symptoms are much more widespread. People suffering from burnout suffer from cognitive impairment, sometimes called 'brain fog,' separation from friends and family, and, more particularily, a diminished ability to perform their jobs and the world around them."
"Our analysis indicates that burnout can also be triggered by predisposing personality traits, particularly perfectionism. They tend to be good workers because they are, but they also tend to burn out because they set unrealistic and unrelenting performance standards for themselves that they ultimately cannot achieve," Parker added.
The research mentioned in a currently published book Burnout: A Guide to Identifying Burnout and Pathways to Recovery, helps readers identify their own burnout patterns and offers approaches for rekindling passion and building resilience.
