According to a study published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, it was found that people who spend more time on digital platforms like WhatsApp are more prone to good and favourable aspects of well-being. The research was titled as 'Psychosocial Outcomes Associated with Engagement with Online Chat Systems'.
Also, the research brought out that the more time a person spends on WhatsApp each day, the less lonely or depressed they feel and these social media platforms boost the self- esteem of people by providing them with a feeling of acceptance from the society and brings them closer to their friends and family.
The study was done with the participation of 200 individuals. 158 women and 42 men, who had an average age of 24 years participated in the study. This selection of age cleared that the research targeted the millennials. The group which used WhatsApp for an average of 55 minutes a day for the purpose of group chat.
Another study by Edge Hill University said that spending more and more time interacting with friends and family on WhatsApp helps in relieving from psychological problems.
These studies prove to be authentic as people using social media reported a higher level of self- esteem and fewer feelings of loneliness. Studies like these give a major boost and support against the criticism that social media faces.
Benefits of social media are often neglected and overseen by the ill-effects it is unexpectedly associated with. Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook are not as bad for an individual’s health and well-being as people earlier believed it to be.
