Swami Dhyan Unmesh, Restorative yoga teacher  & Meditation Facilitator

Yoga is a scientific method of deep relaxation. In ancient scriptures Yoga is also called Yog. Union of Body, Mind and Breath. In ancient scriptures breath is defined as Prana the spirit.  So we can easily concluded that Yoga is the science of Body, mind and spirit.  As we know that our breath is the barometer of our emotional well being, Yoga helps us to improve the quality of our breathing and thus enhance the positive emotions with bottomline as happiness and well being.

Restorative Yoga is a science of deep relaxation through yoga practices. The Headstand (Sirsasana) posture is dream of every yoga practitioner and is one of the most widely recognized advanced poses of yoga. Have you ever wondered how it feels after holding head stand for 5 to 7 mins?  It’s a feeling of ultimate relaxation, silent and peaceful mind.

There are dozens of poses in yoga other than headstand, which can give an experience of this union. Apart from relaxation it also has power of healing and restoring.

One of the greatest Yoga Guru Shri B K S Iyengar treated many patients by making them hold poses in sequence using different props thus making the complex poses simple so that body comfortably perform the complex poses and benefit from enormous helming effects. Apart from the healing effects it provides the practitioner a taste of union or ultimate relaxation.
In the west Judith Lasater made restorative yoga popular. Restorative yoga involves holding the asanas by using the props to make the body comfortable. It typically has 5 to 7 postures to hold for 5 to 8 minutes each.

There are sequences, which include all chakras, or strengthening back or respiratory systems, curing digestive disorders, and gaynecological issues to name a few. Whether you are looking for relaxation or restoring your health, restorative yoga fits everybody unconditionally.
