Vaastu Shastra: The Ancient Indian Science Of Architecture That Connects Your Wellbeing

While constructing a new home or an office space, Vasstu can create the perfect environment to protect and nourish you and fill your space with abundance and happiness

It was in 1905 that the western world ‘scientifically’ accepted the intimate connection between matter and energy. As Albert Einstein gave the famous equation, E=mc2, he also proved that energy and matter are different forms of the same thing!

Even without these equations, Indian sages and scientists have always based their propositions and theories on this very understanding that everything in the universe has a ‘gross’ (matter) aspect and a ‘subtle’ (energy) aspect. One influences the other and both need to be dealt with as a whole to accomplish any meaningful change.

Vaastu Shastra: The ancient Indian science of architecture

Vaastu Shastra is a study of Indian architectural science that aims to create spaces that nurture physical health, mental peace, and spiritual well-being. Its fundamental principles seek harmony between people and their environment in matter and energy.

When we construct buildings and spaces using Vastu Shastra, it balances the energies of the living space. It considers the harmonious integration of five elements - earth, water, fire, air, and space in the architectural design. It allows us to weave together the traditional architectural elements and modern designs, so that negative energy can be eliminated and positive spaces can be created.

Vaastu that connects your wellbeing

Vaastu is a very practical science. It is like gravity that works on the believer and non-believer alike! For instance, Vaastu advises us to construct homes away from hospitals and graveyards to avoid negative energies. Just a visit to the hospital and seeing sickness all around is enough to make anybody feel low.

Vaastu emphasises natural light, ventilation, and the use of non-toxic building materials, which are conducive to good health. It strongly focuses on water bodies or gardens which are therapeutic. The interiors too should be open and inviting with large windows to allow natural light. All of these aspects enhance positivity and well-being.

Vaastu in architecture - Tips that help

The working of the universe is mysterious and beyond the complete comprehension of our minds. The principles of Vaastu Shastra can create multiple opportunities to harmonize our energies with the environment.

  1. The cardinal directions - north, south, east, west - influence the energy flow and thus building alignments become important. The main entrance is often facing the rising sun or the east that energises new beginnings. At the same time, the south and west sides are heavier, blocking negative influences.

  1. The room placements are made optimally for function and flow of energy. Bedrooms are best located in the southwest direction which imparts stability and restfulness. The southeast direction, representing the fire element, is best for the kitchen which is the centre of nourishment and vitality. The Pooja room should be in the northeast, fostering divine and positive vibrations.

  1. A balanced and harmonious layout should be achieved with some common features like open central spaces or courtyards that facilitate natural light and ventilation. Having a symmetrical layout biases your space towards equilibrium and orderliness.

  1. Finally, irregular shapes, protrusions, or extensions are best avoided because they cause unnecessary disruptions in the energy flow and cause disharmony. Children and even adults may lose footing, bump into walls or have falls because of such features!
