How to be Happy Every day Every moment

By Swami Anand Kul BhushanTravelling from village to village, a Sufi wanderer was passing through a jungle. As it became dark and the next village was far away, he decided to spend the night on a riverside. During the night, it began to rain; soon it became a torrent followed by a thunderstorm and strong winds. Shivering and covered with leaves and twigs, he shivered through the night.Thinking of a cozy cottage and a hot cup of tea, he looked up at the first feeble ray of sun and said, “Oh my Master, why have you made me suffer so much? Why can’t you show me some kindness?”Then he gazed at the river and saw it had turned into gold! The first rays of the sun had transformed the rushing river into a sheet of shimmering gold. He then saw the trees, fresh and dancing in the breeze; heard the birds chirping and singing; gazed at the flowers in all their glorious colours. Suddenly he shuddered at what he had uttered and hastily fell on his knees and pleaded, “Forgive me, oh my Master; you have already blessed me with so much which I could not see.”This story applies to almost all of us. We overlook what we have but keep on asking for more and what we do not have. Waking up every morning, what are our first thoughts? Most likely complaints about how badly we slept, why we have to get up so soon, why we have less energy and all the problems at home and at work. All this puts us in a bad mood before we do anything.Try a different approach first thing every morning. Get up and go out on the balcony or the window to greet the sun and then starting thanking sun that is existence and the source of life for what you are blessed with. Start with life itself, the most precious gift to you by existence that can be taken away any time without notice. Then your gratitude for love in your life; love from your parents, spouse, children, relatives, friends and colleagues. Love makes your life worth living. Now list all the other blessings you enjoy. As the list gets longer as you do practice every day, you are surprised at all these wonderful blessings. And when you do it every day, without fail, it provides a positive and happy start for the day that remains throughout the day.Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where to find it. Our happiness lies in the blessings we already have. Remember them every morning and you will exude, share and vibrate with happiness and energise others without saying a word. Happiness will not come from your desires, demands and duties. IT will come if you are thankful for all you already have. Create your own happiness every morning.Osho talks about a Sufi mystic who had always remained happy was asked…. For seventy years people had watched him, he had never been found sad. One day they asked him, ‘What is the secret of your happiness?’ He said, ‘There is no secret. Every morning when I wake up, I meditate for five minutes and I say to myself, ‘Listen, now there are two possibilities: you can be miserable, or you can be blissful. Choose.’ And I always choose to be blissful.’Thanking: Thanking existence for all wonderful blessings of life and love. Photo – Swami Joy Sangeetam.

Spinoza's philosophy of "Substance Monism" and "Substance Dualism"

Like most philosophies of th seventeenth centrury, Spinoza philosophical has the nottion of substance at its heart. This concept can be traced back to Aristotle, who asked, “ what is it about an object that stays the same when it undergoes change?” Wax, for example, can melt and change its shape, size, color, smell, and texture, and yet still remain wax, promoting the question: what are we referring to when we speak off “ the wax” ? since it can change in every was that we can perceive, the wax must also be something beyond its perceptible properties, and for Aristotle this unchanging thing is the Wax’s  “substance” more generally, substance is anything that has properties – or that which underlies the world of appearance.Spinoza employs, “substance in a similar ways definig it as that which is self explanatory – or that which can be understood by knowing its nature alone, as opposed to all other things that can be known only by there relationship with other things. For example, the concept “cart” can only be understood with reference to other concepts such as motion, transport, and so on. Moreover for Spinoza there can only be one such substance, for there were two understanding one would entail understanding its relationship with the other which contradicts the definition of susbstance. Further more, he argues, since there is only one such substance, there can, infact, be nothing but that substance and everything else is in some sense a part of it. Spinoza’s position is known as “substance monism”, which claims that all things are unltimately aspects of a single thing, as opposed to “substance dualism”, which claims that there are two kinds of things in the universe most commonly defined as mind and matter. For Spinoza then substance underlies our experience, but it can also be known by its various attributes. He does not specify how many attributes substance has, but he says that human beings, atleast can conconcieve of two – namely, the attribute of extension (Physicality) and the attribute of thought (Mentality). For this reason Spinoza is also known as an attribute dualist, and he claims that these two attributes cannot be explained by each other, and so must be included in any complete account of the word. As for substance itself, Spinoza says that we are right to call it God or nature – that self explaining thing which, in human form, sees itself under the attributes of body and mind.

Self Rememberance is key for creating awareness

Your self-remembering cannot be reflected in your mind because you are behind the mind. It can reflect only things, which are in front of it. You can just see others, but you cannot see yourself.

Values become our personal compass to shape destiny

Values guide our every decision and, therefore, our destiny. Those who know their values and live by them become the leaders of our society. They are exemplified by outstanding individuals through out our nation, from the board room to the classroom. For example, did you see the movie stand and deliver? it told the story of the maverick Math teacher Jaime Escalante. Were you as inspired as I was by the heroic strides he made in the transmitting to his students his passion of learning? He got them to associate in their nervous systems, at the deepest level, a sense of pride in their capacity to master those things others were certain they could never learn. His example of commitment translated to these young people the power of values. They learnt from him discipline, confidence, the importance of the team, flexibility, and the power of absolute determination. He did not talk to these kids in the barrio about what they should do with their lives, he was a living demonstration, a new definition of what was possible. He not only got them to pass a calculus placement test in numbers that every one thought were impossible, but he also got them to change their beliefs about who they were and what they were capable off if they constantly committed to holding themselves to a higher standard. If you want the deepest level of life fulfilment, we can achieve it in only one way, and that is by doing what these two men have done: by deciding upon what we value most in life, what our highest values are, and then committing to live by them every single day. Unfortunately, this action is far too rare in today's society. Too often, people have no clear idea of what is important to them. They waffle on any issue, the world is a mass of gray to them, they never take a stand for anything or anyone. If you and I are not clear about whats most important in our lives - what we truly stand for - then how can we ever expect to lay the foundation for a sense of self esteem, much less have the capacity to make effective decision? if you have ever found yourself in a situation where you had a tough time making a decision about something, the reason is that you weren't clear about what you value most within that situation. We must remember that all decisions making comes down to values clarification. When you know what is most important to you, making a decision is quiet simple. Most people, though, are unclear about what is most important in their lives, and thus decision making becomes a form of internal torture. This is not true for those who have clearly defined the highest principles of their lives. They act as personal compass to guide them through a situation fraught with peril.

Can Wellbeing be changed

Contrary to their insouciant optimism, it turns out that many aspects of human behaviour do not change lastingly.  Your waste line is a prime example. Dieting is a scam, one that bilks americans out of USD 50 billion annually. You can follow any diet on the best seller list and within a month loose 5% of your body weight
