Alcohol Harms The Others

A research led by Madhabika B Nayak of the Alcohol Research Group in the US concluded that around 21 per cent of women and 23 per cent of men experienced harm and it also analysed data of 8,750 adults who answered questions from two databases in 2015 -- the National Alcohol’s Harm to Others Survey and the National Alcohol Survey.

The people who share proximity with the alcoholics have to go through mental and physical harm. Moreover, the harms from others’ drinking are a threat to their health and well-being. Research stated that nearly an estimated 53 million adults in the US experienced harm because of someone else’s drinking. The harms associated with it are not only restricted to threats or harassment but also includes vandalism, physical aggression, harms related to driving, financial and family problems as well.

The harms from others’ drinking are widespread and the people below 25 have a higher risk of experiencing it. Drinking five or more drinks at a time for men and four or more drinks for women are considered to be heavy drinking. People consuming a minimal amount of alcohol also sometimes undergo the risk of harassment, threats, and driving-related harm.

A pragmatic and broad-ranging posture should be framed and the policies should be contemplated like alcohol pricing, taxation reduced availability and restricting advertising.
