How To Improve Metabolism Without Exercise?

When we refer to our body's metabolism, we are actually talking about all the chemical reactions that happen within our bodies. These reactions can be anabolic (creation of molecules) or catabolic (destruction of molecules).

Metabolism is often used interchangeably with metabolic rate. The higher the metabolic rate in the body, the higher are the calories burned, the more energized you will feel, and the more weight you will eventually lose.

The simplest way to increase metabolism is to exercise. There are many other ways apart from exercise that also aid in this:

1. Consuming spicy food - Spices such as turmeric, cumin, and chili temporarily increase your metabolic rate by slowing down your appetite. Add spices to your meal by adding in gravies, tea, and other beverages or make a kadha out of it and sip on it throughout the day.

2. Drinking cold water - When we drink cold water, our body uses energy to heat it up to our body temperature as a result of which a few calories are burnt. The result might not be significant but can considerably add up if done regularly. It is important to practice caution while drinking cold water just after exercising or performing strenuous work. There should always be a gap between the two.

3. Eating enough protein in your diet - Our body has to expend more energy to digest a protein-rich meal than it has to for carbohydrate or fat-rich meal. It is important to add good quality protein sources to the diet such as dairy, egg, meat, seafood, pulses, legumes, and nuts.

4. Standing up rather than sitting - Again, standing up rather than sitting might only help in shedding negligible calories but if we make a habit out of it then it might add up to a significant amount. While the idea may seem bizarre initially, it will be easier once we make it into a habit. Walk when you talk on the phone, stand while using public transport, take 1 to 2 minutes break from work every 20 minutes to just stand up, walk around and relax.

5. Drinking caffeine - Caffeine from green tea or coffee helps in releasing fat from fat tissues while also increasing the metabolic rate. Include beverages such as green tea, black tea, black coffee in your diet.

6. Getting a good night's rest - Not getting enough sleep alters the glucose metabolism in the body that has a significant impact on metabolism. It is important to remain stress-free, stay away from gadgets an hour prior to sleeping, and have your last meal 2 to 3 hours before getting into bed.

7. Consuming fiber-rich foods - The simple fact that fibre is indigestible helps in increasing metabolic rate. Include fibre rich natural sources such as green leafy vegetables, berries, flaxseed, cereals, and millets. It is these simple steps that when combined together can alter your health outcomes in a positive direction. Changing our habits slowly but regularly has a great long term impact on our health.
