Significance
Ayurveda is the oldest and well documented system of medicine in the Indian history. Its holistic approach is prevalent even in the 21st century. Healing systems promote the prevention of diseases by maintaining a balance between body, mind and spirit. This traditional form of treatment is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Ayurvedic treatment focuses on balancing the five elements or doshas. To promote this ancient healing system across the world, the Union Ministry of AYUSH started National Ayurveda Day on 28 October 2016.
In the Puranas and Vedas, Lord Dhanvantari has been described as the physician of the Gods. There during his birth-anniversary or jayanti, that is on Dhanteras, the National Ayurveda Day was started and is observed.
Himalayan Siddha Akshar, Founder, Akshar Yoga Institutions said, "The science of Ayurveda is a holistic tradition for wellness and health. Yoga and ayurveda are some forms of alternative holistic healing which have now gained popularity throughout the world. However like everything else treatment using Ayurveda and its applications should be implemented at an early stage if we are seeking to heal an illness. By using these methods very late into the treatment it may not work as effectively as it would have if we had begun the dosage at the right time. While it is true that people have begin to realise the potency that ayurvedic medicine carries it is also important that just like allopathic medication it must be used right from the start or from an early stage in order for it to work thoroughly."
