School of Climate Change and Sustainability will be set up by the Delhi University under the Institute of Eminence Scheme. It has been set up with an aim to train “human resources capable of addressing and managing the emerging challenges of climate change” and possibilities of sustainable development, under the Institute of Eminence (IoE) scheme.
An acclaimed Environmental Scientist, professor C R Babu, will become the honorary Director of the school. The founder of Environmental Teaching and research in the University of Delhi was also founded by him. The position of Joint Director will be given to Professor Inderjit Singh, an eminent plant ecologist of international repute and Prof. R.S. Sharma will serve as officer on special duty.
According to Delhi University, the novel coronavirus pandemic has resulted into “loss of ecological integration.” The world has witnessed several environmental challenges which included loss of biodiversity, depletion of natural resources, different forms of pollution are all the result of worldwide pandemic. The university aims to achieve sustainable development goals, with the centre of attraction on the national development, as well as to make Delhi University a “World-Class University.”
The school will be conducting research and training with pertinent departments of the university as well as with other institutes across India and the world. Thus, one can address divergent issues of climate change and sustainability. “The school will develop a cadre of qualified professionals and practitioners and evolve leaders who will translate socio-ecological theories into practical solutions for meeting the challenges of national priority – sustainable development,” the statement added.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development provided supporting grants to the varsity under its Institution of Eminence Scheme for undertaking research in cutting edge areas with a focus on the national development as well as to make the varsity a world-class university, the statement added.
“DSCC&S will take up research in priority areas like how to make our cities climate resilient? how to achieve sustainability in the face of environmental challenges?” the statement said.
“The School (will) also generate much-needed manpower in areas that manage sustainable developmental technologies in areas of energy, resource recycling, which include wastewater management and solid waste management and resource enhancement so that the development is sustainable,” the statement added.
This new initiative of the Delhi University will bring significant change in the environment and the university is on the steeping stone towards its success to justify to the environment, which has been deteriorating as a result of human activities.
