UN Report On International Drug Abuse Day reveals

The United Nation (UN) celebrates International Drug Abuse Day with World Drug Report 2019. The report revealed, Globally, drug use disorders affect some 35 million people approximately, who require treatment services. With a wider spread, adverse health consequences of drug use are more severe. This fact was revealed by improved research and more precise data in 2019 report.

There has been an increase in the drug influenced people in 2017, according to the survey conducted in India and Nigeria as both are among the top ten populous countries in the world.

In 2017, 5.5 per cent of the global population that is estimated at 271 million people approximately, aged between 15-64 years had used drugs in the previous year. The recent data by UN shows the popularity of the use of opioids in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America and the use of cannabis in North America, South America and Asia compared with 2009, as reported by UN report and revealed on United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The number of opioid users is estimated at 53 million, up 56 per cent from previous estimates as reported by World drug report. In 2017, opioids are also responsible for the death of two third of the 585,000 people who die due to drug use. Out of 11 million people who injected drugs, 1.4 million are infected with HIV and 5.6 million with hepatitis C.

After reviewing the report, Executive Director of UNODC, Yury Fedotov said, "The findings of this year's World Drug Report fill in and further complicate the global picture of drug challenges, underscoring the need for broader international cooperation to advance balanced and integrated health and criminal justice responses to supply and demand."

This improved research and more precise 2019 report is definitely an eye opener for the world to see where the population is heading. It also reveals, instead of less drug use, how the shift of people has inclined towards it and how drug abuse is affecting the lives of people in the World.
