Dance is a holistic activity for the mind, body and soul. Using dance as a medium of physical activity and creative outlet helps to channelize energy in a resourceful manner. This is where the spirit of dance and the finesse of performing arts come together and help develop skills, understanding and knowledge of oneself. Dance gives people something to look forward to and offers them an opportunity to participate in an activity that they like. For people who find it challenging to make friends or social get a platform to express themselves and their personality through dance and as a result starts reflecting positively.
In today’s times when technology and social media has taken over most of everyone’s time, dance is a great hobby where one can learn, enjoy and work out at the same time. Each class targets towards skilful progression to improve confidence, fitness levels, focus, team spirit, concentration, positive thinking, discipline, all-round development, posture and body language. Participants are encouraged to learn in a healthy environment where no one is judged. My motto has always been “Have Feet. Will Dance.”, therefore every student/learner is given equal consideration and the whole group grows together.
Not only do they learn to dance and engage in physical activity but also experience something that gives them confidence, improves blood circulation flow, strengthens muscles and weigh; better coordination and skilling practices. Dance is a great way to release energy, shed inhibitions and let out emotions. When you dance you tend to sweat and you release ‘feel good’ endorphins that make you happy. Good dancing, good music is a great way to be in a cheerful state of mind. However, dance is a physical interpretation of what the music says. Good music combined with good dancing is a great way to be in a happy state of mind. It helps one grown mentally and those who practice dance as an activity helps developing the brain in its own creative unique way. The teaching pattern is interactive and communicative ensuring that the learning process is fun and stress-free.
Different styles and types of dance are also different forms of work out. While ballet works completely on inner strength, balance and posture, Hip Hop / Bboying have exercises that require stronger arms and legs. Even Indian Classical Dance forms are strenuous workouts for the quadriceps with all the squats. When I teach students the Shiamak Style of contemporary, my work out includes a combination of abdominal exercises, plies, and stretches.
Working professionals tend to lead a sedentary lifestyle. With dance, they find a stress buster where they can disconnect from their worries and just do something they love to refresh their minds. It channels their mind into a positive space and it incorporates a form of physical activity into their lifestyle. In fact, for many it helps connect with like-minded people, find friends and even network with a different circle. A lot of corporate organisations invite my faculty to teach in their premises during / post working hours for their employees to engage or as a form of team building activity that helps them stay fit.
Any activity that people engage in needs to become a part of their regular schedule to really experience and appreciate its impact. Dance is a form of art that evolves constantly and continuously, so to imbibe the maximum, it is essential to make it a part of the routine. There is a progression in the participants’ ability to grasp choreography, understand movement and realizing the positive impact it has on their personality, which one can only achieve by making it a part of their daily lifestyle.
