In the limelight of the event, Dr Huzaifa Khorakiwala, CEO, Wockhardt Foundation delivered a presentation on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Rural Health. He addressed the audience with topics like CSR in healthcare, the crisis in healthcare, and his organisations’ sincere efforts to bring a positive change in the lives of the people.
On the subject of CSR in healthcare, Huzaifa said, “It’s important that we should address the well-being of all stakeholders and not just the company’s stakeholder as they are profit driven only. The approach should be holistic and integrated”.
On the role of his organisation for the betterment of the society, Khorakiwala told that Wockhardt Foundation is working to promote gender equality, women empowerment, and education. “We are fighting against child mortality, hunger, and health conditions like HIV-AIDS, and Malaria”, he further added.
Realising the pathetic condition of healthcare in India, Huzaifa said that the World Health Organisation recommends one doctor per 1000 doctor but in India, we have one doctor for 11,000 doctors. He also said, “We have problems like healthcare infrastructure, overcrowded public hospitals, neglect of rural population, and modern technology. There’s a huge requirement of CSR in these aspects as well”.
While recognizing initiatives of his organisation, Khorakiwala said, “In health, we have programs like ‘Pronto toilet’, ‘Bio-toilet’, and ‘Shudhu’. We have so far built around 5000 toilets. Also, under Mobile 1000 initiative, our 1000 vans go in villages and provide medical treatment at free of cost to the villagers. For children, our organisation is working on ‘Khel Khel Mein’.”
