According to the research, having two pints of beer can be more effective than taking a painkiller for relieving headaches. The results came after putting the efforts of a total of 18 studies from the University of Greenwich.
Two pints of beer can elevate the blood alcohol content to approximately 0.08 per cent. It gives the body a small elevation of pain threshold which helps in relieving moderate to large intensity headaches.
The study was conducted on more than 400 individuals and in a comparative study found that the intake of two pints of beer could reduce the pain by up to 25 per cent.
The researchers concluded, “Findings suggest that alcohol is an effective analgesic that delivers clinically-relevant reductions in ratings of pain intensity, which could explain alcohol misuse in those with persistent pain, despite its potential consequences for long-term health.”
The limitation attached to the study was that the researchers were unable to figure out whether alcohol reduces the pain because it affects brain’s receptor nerves or it’s the lowering anxiety which helps in reducing the pain to such an effect.
On comparing the effects of alcohol with opioids researchers suggest that it can be compared to opioid drugs such as codeine and the effect is more powerful than paracetamol.
While the research is based on a small sample of individuals, health problems associated with alcohol can’t be superseded for its benefits as an analgesic. It is a potent factor for liver failures, and other life-threatening situations.
